In the
fertile oases, the area under cultivation covers about
70,000 hectares of fruit crops and more than 20,000
of vegetable crops watered by the purest and richest
water from the melted snow of the Andes and bathed
in a sunlight all Mendoza inhabitants are proud of.
Mendoza has a long tradition in the
production of fresh fruit. Nevertheless, farmers have
been smart in adjusting to world preferences: cherries,
peaches, nectarines, plums, pears, apples, quinces,
melons and watermelons are sent by air and sea to
the furthest destinations in order to meet the needs
of every particular market. Fruit and vegetables are
manufactured as preserves, they are dried or dehydrated,
all of them keeping the natural qualities of a full-taste
product
The region also stands out as an important producer
of olive oil and olives. On that account, new technologies
are developed every day in order to manufacture the
oil preferred by the Mediterranean palate
The natural intensity of honey, jellies, jams and
marmalades proves to be an inevitable ingredient in
the delicious desserts and local confectionery.
On the other hand, organic
agriculture in Mendoza has become a promising sector
showing significant growth expectations. Even when
its potential development is still difficult to estimate,
many producers have already set their sights on conquering
a share in the international market. The organic sector
has developed rapidly and counts on a productive,
institutional and organizational structure that provides
a solid base to build a sustainable competitive frame
throughout time.
